While I was visiting Candace & John on the set at the final taping of Fuller House, John invited me to come visit him on the set of his new show. He started filming the pilot of his new Disney+ show called Big Shot where he plays a basketball coach.
The series follows Marvyn Korn, a temperamental basketball coach who is fired from his job at the University at Wisconsin and relocates to California to coach a girls’ basketball team at Westbrook School, an elite high school for girls.
It’s funny actually for John to play a basketball coach because he’s not into sports at all in real life, but he did a lot of research to play the part.
Upon arrival there was a golf cart who was on its way to come and get us.
The set John was filming at was at the other side of the Paramount lot so we sure could use that cart to take us there because we’d be losing a lot of time if we had to walk the whole way.
Just as we arrived at the set, the door opened and guess who came out?
You guessed it, my dearest friend, talk about perfect timing.
We hugged each other tightly and he got us inside to show us around.
He introduced me to the entire cast and crew who were there saying I was his friend from Belgium.
He showed us the set where they were filming scenes that day (the basketball field) and then we took some pictures as well.
When it was time for him to film his next scene, he told me to go sit in his chair and listen to the taping. Mom also got a chair and headphones so we could follow everything that they were saying. That was so cool! We felt like we were one of the crew.
When he was done he came up to me blowing on his whistle saying I had to pay attention. Which I was doing very closely thank you very much. Then he gave his whistle to me, said he didn’t need it anymore.
After that first scene they had to rehearse the next scene so meanwhile mom and I got a tour around the whole Paramount lot. Manuelo, our driver, told us about the history of the studios and also told us some tips and tricks on how they film certain scenes, like a whole crowd coming out of the subway. We were surprised when he told us how they actually make it look like it’s a whole crowd. Or how they film a scene in an ocean, using a bluescreen and all.
Really cool to know now! Sorry folks, classified secrets so I can’t share them with you.
By the time we got back to the set they were ready filming the next scene so mom and I got back into our seats to follow along.
We were really grateful to Manuelo for driving us around the whole lot.
Even some girls from the cast were jealous of me because they hadn’t even had the whole tour yet.
But they couldn’t start right away because they discovered that John wasn’t wearing his whistle anymore. Of course he didn’t, he gave it to me. Guess he wasn’t supposed to do that but oh well. They had plenty left so they won’t miss the one I got 😉
When he got a new whistle it was shooting time for real.
This time it was a scene with Cricket Whampler ( who plays Samantha) and Tisha Custodio (who plays “Mouse”).
I really loved being able to already know two scenes from the pilot episode so I really couldn’t wait until it would air on TV so I knew how it would look like in the final production.
After that scene it was time for lunch so unfortunately that also meant I had to say goodbye to John…
But not before giving me something else: his script! He wrote the most beautiful message on it before giving it to me.
He asked us how we would get back and we said by bus, exactly how we got there in the first place.
He wouldn’t have it so he told Abigail, Dean Lorey’s assistant, to call an Uber for us and drop us off at a mall downtown, close to our hotel.
This was seriously one of the most coolest, most special days of my entire life!
I’ll be forever grateful to John for doing all of this for me, as well as everything he did last week at the Fuller House set.
xoxo
